Munro Vehicles: a rugged electric 4×4 built on two PDM25s

Munro builds all-electric off-road vehicles for forestry, mining, farming, rescue and defence. Hardwire PDM25s run the low-voltage electrics in every one, front and rear.

The challenge

Since 2019, Munro has been developing the M170 and M280: electric 4x4s that pair a traditional ladder-frame chassis with a modern electric drivetrain. They are built for some of the toughest work there is, and expected to keep going for more than 30 years.

That meant the low-voltage electrics had to survive vibration, water and dirt for decades, while staying flexible enough to change quickly as prototypes evolved. Conventional fuse and relay boxes struggle on both counts.

The solution

Munro chose the Hardwire PDM25 early in development and fits two to every vehicle, linked over CAN bus to each other and to the main vehicle control unit.

  • Front PDM25 runs coolant pumps, headlights and other front-end equipment
  • Rear PDM25 runs interior lighting, window motors and rear systems
  • The vehicle control unit uses CAN data from both for power management, fault detection and monitoring

The results

Because outputs are set in software, Munro’s engineers could add, remove and reassign circuits during prototyping without touching the wiring, which saved time and money on both models.

Solid-state switching removes the relays and fuses that tend to fail in harsh conditions, and the simpler loom cuts parts and long-term maintenance. With orders growing for 2026 and beyond, Munro has made the PDM25 a standard part of its vehicles.
